Hello,

This seems like a basic question and I think I know the answer, but searching the forum hasn't confirmed my suspicion.

I want to take some ebony binding I picked up from RC and put a maple purfling line on the bottom. Then I'm going to follow the tutorial here on the OLF for putting a miter on the end wedge. Adventurous!

My question, the wood purfling strips I buy from LMI are 0.022 along the edge and .100 along the face. This makes it fine for purfling that runs parallel to the binding on the top as well as for rosettes. But this is oriented incorrectly for bending if I laminate it to the bottom of the binding, correct? Instead I'll need to rip some maple strips that are 0.022 on the face grain and .100 (or whatever is needed) on the edge. Is that correct?

I could just try with what I have, but in case someone can save me heartache, that would be great.

Based on read on here I'm planning titebond III to survive the bend.

Brad: The strips you have are OK and use the glue you mentioned. I use binder clips for gluing ,you may have something else. When bending do them in pairs and place the purfling back to back and secure with masking tape in the tight bends. This helps prevent buckling of the purfs during bending. Good luck.

Titebond lll and your good to go,

When you guys spread the titebond on these, do you use a small brush / stick ( I usually use a piece of leftover veneer) and put the glue on a couple inches, clamp, couple inches , clamp... Or do you butter up the whole purfling line and then try to clamp them? I tried both ways. When only working a couple inches at a time I had trouble keeping the purfling flush with the binding.

I believe I had some aluminum foil (cuts down on the mess) and everything got glued then clamped, also all my strips are .100 so there's some wiggle room, run it through the the thickness sander and it's all good

Seems that most of the time the purfling is slightly thinner than the binding. If that is the case I am always careful to make the purfling flush or slightly proud of the binding on the show side. Just put a bead of glue on the binding (about half of it at a time) and clamp the purling to it. When dry, clean it up with a razor blade, used like a scraper, before you proceed with the bending.

I bundle them in pairs as Tom suggest before bending, making sure the show face will be on the outside of the bend.

I also tape the pairs together but have found that if I tightly wrap a small strip of paper around that bundle then tape that will have much less cleanup.
